At 970 acres, Lake Jacomo is a large lake with lots of coves and inlets, much bigger than that in Shawnee Mission Park with its 120 acre lake, or anywhere else on the Kansas side of the metro area. I used to think “Jacomo” was an old Indian word, but I learned later that it’s really just short for Jackson County Missouri. This park used to be called Lake Jacomo, but was later expanded to 7,800 acres, and now includes Blue Springs Lake, which I haven’t spent much time at. Leave your dog at home or in the car, and don’t underestimate how quickly a couple of buffalo can go through a bag of apples! I’ve been coming here for more than 45 years, when my folks used to bring me here on Sunday afternoons to walk the trails. Don’t worry, they’re not mean and just want some supplemental goodies, as they get fed by the parks department and aren’t really dependent on visitors to feed them. It’s free and it’s fun to be so close to these huge animals. Carrots and apples are the preferred food, and park officials ask that you not feed the animals bread or any kind of grain. You can walk up to the tall chain-linked fence and feed whatever animals will come to see what you’ve got for them. Shelter reservations guarantee use of the shelter only - no other conditions implied.One of the most unique aspects of this park is the Hoofed Animal Enclosure, which features herds of buffalo and elk in separate paddocks. Please think of others, leave the shelter and tables clean for the next user. However, due to frequent use and exposure to the elements, we recommend that you check your site prior to your reservation for shelter condition. Trash is emptied and shelters are cleaned on a regular basis by Parks Department personnel.These dates are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Park restrooms are generally closed around the 1st week of November through the last week of March.See special use permits to see if your event meets the criteria. Some events require a Park or Shelter Special Use Permit in addition to a shelter reservation.Maintenance staff may not be aware of any last minute changes to rentals and may effect the cleanliness of the shelter site. When inquiring to update rental time same day of rental, this can be done without charge based on availability. Requests for refunds are subject to a $7 administrative processing charge, and transfers are subject to a $5 transfer fee. before refund or transfer can be processed. All Facility Reservation Contract paperwork must be returned to the Parks and Recreation Counter prior to the contract reservation date and time and no later than the last Parks and Recreation business day of operation by 3 p.m. Requests for refunds or transfers must be made prior to reservation date and time.A permit will be issued and must be with you during the use of the shelter or facility, as proof of your reservation. ![]() (We cannot hold reservations without payment.) Shelter reservation fees are due at the time of reservation.The only exception is Hidden Valley shelter, which may be reserved 30 days in advance. Shelters and facilities may be reserved up to 1 year in advance of the desired date.The following policies apply to reservations: Choose a date, time, and facility, then call the administrative office at 81, come to the Fieldhouse, 425 NE Mock, to make a reservation or reserve online. Several of the city's picnic shelters and facilities are available for reservation.
